Atheism is the lack of a belief in the spiritual, supernatural, or metaphysical. It is better categorized under the category of philosophy, as it is the result of the adoption of the philosophy of "naturalism", which is the philosophy that only those things which can be experienced through our physical senses are real, and nothing else can possibly be real. The Archbishop of Canterbury - Archbishop's lecture - Religious :: Jan 29, 2008 I do so in the consciousness that we have just marked marking .. in the mouth of a militant atheist. But the moral question remains. http://www.archbishopofcanterbury.org/1561HOME |
So, atheists, why do you post here instead of in the philosophy category?
Clearly you do not have a dictionary. Look atheism up before you tell us what we do or do not believe.
I have a religion, just not a theistic one.
And besides, this is a forum ABOUT R&S. Or should only cats be posting in the Cats section?
Edit: Actually, a fundie gave me this nickname in a rabid hate-mail. I'm rather fond of it.
The definition of spirituality can apply to a variety of things, and is different for everyone. I am a rather spiritual person. But my definition is more akin to that of philosophy, which you are correct in saying. Thus, I answer questions in both Philosophy and Religion & Spirituality. I tend to go to R&S more often simply because there are far more questions to answer. There are very few in Philosophy.
Why do so many humans post questions on the board clearly marked for cats?
You don't have to be something to be interested in it.
Atheism is about religion- we just believe in one fewer god than you.
You have no problem believing in fewer gods then the ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians.
We just took it one step further.
Because we are trying to unlock your brain to freely think for itself!

Atheism is the rejection of religion. That means it is ABOUT religion. So this is the place to talk about it. And this question gets asked like 50 times a day. Are you guys really that insecure that you can't take criticism?
I drink spirits religiously.
We love to cause a ruckus
wrong wrong wrong
atheism is lack of belief in a DEITY
anything else is optional
In order to make YOU question. To educate. To make you think. To help you use logic. To encourage critical thinking and philosophy.
In my mind Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and all the rest belong under mythology. I guess the world just isn't perfect.

*Cheers*
Atheists can't be spiritual?
Someone should alert the Dalai Lama.
Edit- your faith seems to make you very angry. You might want to choose another path.
You are so very incorrect. Atheism is the belief in the absence of god or gods, period.
Even though I don't have a belief in god I do believe in the following:
1. I tap into the wonder of the universe. Its complexity as represented through experiment, theory, practice and discovery is enough to fill any life with a sense of novelty and amazement.
tothesource:: So why do I—a Christian in my very bones—find an atheist’s candor to be so . Since neither our minds nor our mathematics can handle infinity very well, http://www.tothesource.org/11_15_2006/11_15_2006.htmHOME |
2. Some scientists see a "spiritual" side to the universe by stressing if the universe is all that there is, and we are a part of this universe, then we are the universe - only in thinking form. Imagine that, we are all representatives of the universe's ability to think back on itself. This is truly extraordinary.
3. Some atheists believe not so much in the spiritual as they do in the "human spirit". It is that sense of adventure, play, curiosity and learning. It is acknowledging that we are here and we have an energy inside us to drive ourselves forward into this spectacular world. This Earth is a playground, a magnificent arena where in one lifetime of experience none will be able to take it all in. This can more than lead to a fulfilling life, a life of energetic nuances.
4. Simply being alive is enough to allow one to appreciate life's value. How cool it is to be an entity such as the human. Just learning about the body itself, its inner workings and associations with its environment is beyond any beauty and grace we can possibly know.
5. This Earth is filled with over six billion different human expressions of life, as well as trillions of other representations of life in the animal kingdoms. This is enough to fill any person with awe-inspiring inspiration. Knowing we share a community on this little blue pearl called Earth should lead to wise stewardship and the need to protect it.
im not athiest but i think they post in here alot of times to answer questions or to defend themsleves from theist morons who do not care to understand thier way of life and just make up random things to put them down..
I don't know where you got your definition but Atheism is the simple lack of belief in deities.
Many Buddhists are Atheist but also very spiritual.
Aside from that, this isn't an exclusive club. It's a public site and anyone can post here.
Are you a chef? If not, why do you post in the Food category? Are you a professional athlete? If not, why do you post in the Sports category? Are you a television producer, writer, or star? If not, why do you post in the TV category?
This is Religion and Spirituality, not Religious and Spiritual.
Where else would you suggest we talk about religion?
*drink*
I'm here to discuss religion, and there are those non-theistic religions..as I'm sure you'll find out...
Tawaen will be along shortly, I'm sure...(see? she was)
We are here to strengthen Christians' beliefs and to offer ourselves for conversion.
Oh wow...this has only been asked 1700+ times.
How original of you...
How about instead of the rote answer... that I actually have saved for these occations I try another technique.
I'm going to paste 11 of the the last 20 questions I've answered, and let you guess ;)
Here goes...
-Should we call us Atheist or brights?
-Are you willing to die for your religious (or atheist) beliefs?
-Atheists: what do you believe?
-Why do atheists reason that they don't believe in the spiritual because there is no physical evidence?
-Why do some Atheist find the need to speak for other Atheists?
-As an Atheist, do you consider yourself intelligent ?
-Atheists, would regrowth of an amputated limb really be sufficient evidence for you to believe?
-This is a Christian asking a question to Atheists...?
-Athiest: which species of venomous snake is best for babbies crib?
-If atheists are souless heathens, why do I have Thelonius Monk playing?
-Don't Athiest take away a child's right to joy...?
We are usually posting questions about religion so this is the place to be. I also post in the football section however I am not a football player.
Because it's just as arguable the religion, itself, is merely philosophy, just ill conceived
*drink*
Because you keep asking us questions.
Yes, but our questions deal with God and religion, so R&S is an appropriate place to ask them. You don't have to follow a religion to ask a question or answer about it.
I don't pose many questions at all--I ANSWER questions posed to atheists day after day after day. Religious people seem to be curious--what can I say?
I don't know where you got your definition of atheism, but you are wrong. It simply means "without theism." I'm here for the obvious reason--I like it. If that makes you mad, oh well.
Plus, it gives me an excuse to *drink.*
so would most religions be under philosophy or myth, but we dont bash your religion. also debate boils the blood and gives a rush to any decent human being, also kinda like quarintining you guys from spreading into other forums like a disease.
