I am currently involved in trying to help novice users learn how to think; about computers, the Internet, Email, and websites. They have many preconceived notions that must be overcome but, fortunately, my site is small enough that most things can be found by brute force.
My forum, on the other hand, will be growing and, over time, will become unwieldy to find particular information. I have already tried to partition it into sub-forums which make sense to me but am constantly asking my students and other users for feedback to help improve things.
My friend made me an .xml sitemap once, but it was only for Google Sitemaps... I couldn't have actually made a page out of it.
This issue touches on the design practice of information architecture. (http://www.sitepoint.com/article/information-architecture) (I include it here merely to flesh out the topic).
Many sites start off small, with a handful of pages and not much in the way of structure. What happens when such a site grows? Often, pages and links are stuck pretty much anywhere. The organizational scheme that makes sense to one person may not, however, make sense to another. Consider the classic example of the tomato -- is it a fruit or a vegetable? Should you file it under fruits or vegetables? Will your customers find it there? One way to resolve this problem is to think of where you'd find it in the supermarket.
In many cases, the current model of a Website cannot successfully accommodate the multiple mental models of users, and the growth in scope and size of the site itself. If you're working on an existing Website, you are probably saddled with an overgrown beast that neither you nor your customers can make much sense of. Here's where IA helps you take a look at the big picture -- the primary goal of your Website -- and achieve that goal by effectively organizing your site.
-- An Introduction to Information Architecture; Sitepoint
IA is a crucial design element for commercial sites over a few dozen pages. The idea is that users do not organize the topic the way the company does internally. By modeling the user mental model in the structure of the site, tech support and site abandonment is decreased.
For one example I faced recently, a site which matches entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, there are at least two mental models. The site must get each type of user to their section, be consistent with their mental model, and guide them to completion of the tasks they came to the site for.
Most web site master the technical skills quickly ...then that's it. IA and other forms of design are content-based, and take more than knowledge of the tools. But getting to know the way users think can also come in handy, from time-to-time.
Found this (http://harman2k.co.uk/EasySiteMap.htm) have not tried it myself
basically you either list all the available pages or the sections on your site and provide links to each section or page.
