Six month old kitten suddenly got awfully meowy?

Published by: rose 2009-01-09
  • I can't really think of why this has happened. Just really over the last couple of weeks. I do speak to him but the whole answering thing is new. When he was teeny (7-10 weeks) he was very vocal around food, but this had stopped for months - until now.

No significant changes in recent weeks altho' he was neutered about a month ago and has been teething on and off for a while

He seems most meowy around the kitchen (wanting food I suspect) or around me (more attention?). I thought he got plenty of both these things (especially attention - I work at home a lot and he's always around or on me anyway...)

I haven't changed anything - could he suddenly be wanting more food (huge appetite increase all of a sudden?)? I'm at a total loss. Any suggestions?

  • He has learned using his voice elicits a response from you! It's basically a good thing. When cats are hurt or in pain, they get very quiet (basic survival instinct), so his being vocal is just to get attention. If he is not too thin, you needn't give him additional food. Mine always meow at me in the kitchen, and they are fat and sassy. When I have dinner, I give them a small portion of canned food as a treat. You can do this or not, he'll be fine either way. Do remember to feed according to his age and size, of course.
Thank you for being a responsible pet owner! I hope you and your kitten have many happy years together.

  • Some cats are just vocal. I have two kittens: one 4 months old, one 5 months. The older cat has always been vocal. It used to scare me - she howls, meows, and makes noises I can't describe. But that's just who she is. The younger kitten has just started becoming vocal, up until now she's been quite. They get regular checkups, good, healthy food, and lots of love. There's nothing wrong. They are just chatty cats. I suspect the same could be said for yours. It is possible the appetite has increased - think of little kids. They hit growth spurts and eat like horses for a few weeks, then go back to their normal diet. If your cat is still eating and playing, and isn't lethargic, I'd guess everything is fine.

  • Even though it's not a female, I'm just wondering if it's got something to do with him reaching sexual maturity. Have you had him neutered? If not, you need to, and soon. If he learns to spray and mark his territory, your house is going to reek and there is no way to get out the smell of a male cat.

    Edit:
Oops! I just reread your question and saw that you have had him neutered. His food might not be satisfying him is he still on kitten chow? They grow best if you leave them on it for the full year. And, he may just be wanting more attention...try getting him some new toys to play with and spending as much quality time with him as you can. One thing that made my cats less needy....get them a buddy. Some cats don't like to be alone.

  • I've found most males to be rather vocal. Especially when neutered. I have one that will hold conversations with me! LoL And they do tend to eat more when they've been neutered. Two of mine weigh over twenty pounds each now, and they are prolific talkers and love attention.

  • Mine had the same problem, His meowy was so loud that his long 'chased away brother cat even came back' for a visit. Our cats are outside, Then the problem became a bit clear, he was having some motion problem. Took him to a vet, He gave 2 small plastic bottles of baby enema and instructed how it should be administered into his rear. We only gave him one. He stopped crying, apparently it was an extreme case of constipation or dead worm getting stuck at the rear end. All is well now. But the poor brother cat has gone back to his wondering.

  • He's training you.
