Depends on who's answering. Many want to label one or the other accoring to their personal views on mainstream vs. underground, lyical content, all around artistry... blah, blah, blah. Truthfully, there is no factual difference. Hank Williams is country music as well as Shania Twain. Sex Pistols are punk as well as Blink 182. The Sugarhill Gang are Rap/Hip Hop as well as Soulja Boy, (though I would NEVER openly admit it). blog | Oh Word: a whole miserable subculture::
The difference between now and then is that Lil Wayne and Kanye West are So many of the classic hip hop albums since have been doing this as well.
