Putnam Valley Central School District:: Computer Problem Solving using Excel. Visual Perception (7 Paragraph Breaks. Insertingh Text- Delete Text. Formatting a Line. block Editing. Cut & Paste http://pvcsd.org/curriculum/technology/Tech_Computer_6.phpHOME | Hi,
I'm trying to format an ebook using Word because the original formatting is really terrible and hard to read. For example, in Microsoft reader it looks like this:
Example example example example example (margin is here)
example
example example example example example
example
example example example example example.
That's one paragraph. And after converting to Word it looks like this:
Example example example example example (margin is here)
example example example example example
example example example example example.
Also, there's a ridiculous amount of spacing between paragraphs. I want to format the document so that there's no spacing between paragraphs and get rid of the unnecessary line breaks and get the words to touch the margin. Something like this:
Example example example example example example example example example example example example example example example example example example example example example example.
I'll change them manually then. And thanks for the link to your styles FAQ, I'll refer to them first before I post here next time.
Rookie,
- sorry for replying late, I got a little lazy:superbiggr: (actually, I got stranded on a deserted island).
Hi,
Uh, does any of you know a good e book forum? The read in word plug in is able to use Microsoft Reader formatting but I can't get Readerworks to use Microsoft Reader formatting so I end up with an e book that I can't change it's font size (through Microsoft Reader). And why do I want to use Readerworks? Cause it's got all this neat customizing options, I don't really need them but they're cool so.....
He said: [ ADDR.com: Help Center ]:: Common setting would be off, because sometimes people accidentally put in extra line breaks. to edit the title and heading spaces. Do not delete the line http://www.addr.com/help/show.cgi?readme-guestbook.htmHOME |
And uh, the headers in my document are all full letter like; CHAPTER, I want to change it to Chapter but I don't know how to create a Style like that...
A style that includes Title case isn't possible. A style that includes upper case is possible. Got me?
:)
And we love every minute of it. :)
That's something coming from a Mac guy, eh?
Glad you have a solution.
Now for the styles, if you set up a paragraph style called "FirstIndent", then you don't have to manually change every first line, it will be taken care of by the style. That way if you set the first line indent to 0.25 in, but your boss wants 0.5 in, you change the style sheet, and every paragraph is automatically updated. It will save you hours of time, and it will insure consistency throughout your entire project.
I think Anne spends some time discussing styles in her book too. Isn't that right, Anne? My book is packed right now, so can't check.
No. It's not. ALL MAC GUYS WANT ME.
The CTRL + * was for the purpose of seeing the paragraph marks in the document (you should have a button on the toolbar that allows you to toggle it). It had nothing to do with the F/R dialog box, it was just so you could see what was in the doc.

Here is an online Tutorial for Word Styles (http://addbalance.com/usersguide/styles.htm)
And another Styles FAQ (http://wordtips.vitalnews.com/W184_Styles.html)
Howdy, and welcome to the board.
Two parts to the question. Always try new procedures on a backup copy
1. Find/Replace: You can use this to get rid of the spacing. Turn on Paragraph markings (CTRL + *). Once the F/R dialog box is open, click in the "Find What" box; then at the bottom, click on "More" button. Then at the bottom of that choose "Special" from there, you can choose Space or Paragraph marks, or a combination. Then in the "Replace with" box, choose what you need (or maybe nothing). Then "Replace all."
2. The other is more fundamental and involves Style sheets. If you haven't used them, this appears to be an ideal place t use them. You can have a Style which formats paragraph with justified plus indent, etc. Once that is done, then getting all paragraphs correct is a matter of assigning the Style to each paragraph.
Yep, I was pushing two different pieces together, answering a question that wasn't asked, and came out smelling like usual. ;)
Gotcha!
BTW, I don't want anything. Just missing chatting with you. :)
Yeah!
I did it! Well, I didn't exactly follow the steps you gave me, I improvised a little. Here's what I did:
1. Replace All ^s^s with (two spaces (in order to preserve paragraph starts)
2. Replace All ^s with (one space (turns out the document has an excess of ^s marks)
3. Replace All (two or more spaces) with ^l(one space) TO-TECH.Com Pocket PC FAQ:: A: See if Mathew Waltons MS Money Sync Tips offers advice that may solve your problem. Dont use page breaks, tabs or extra line spacing. http://to-tech.com/windowsce/faqs/pocketpc-faq.htmHOME | FMLink Help:: It also will help you solve most problems you may encounter. and formatting (use of line breaks, etc.). And check all spelling before you post something. http://www.fmlink.com/About/FAQ/HOME |
4. Delete all paragraph markings.
5. Replace All ^l(one space)s with ^p
6. Add an indentation for first lines of paragraphs.
7. Finally, some manual editing like spellcheck and "justifying" the text and presto, I'm done!
So once again, thanks shades. And uh, you too, mmfell.
Rookie,
- still, it would have been better if the format of the book was perfect to start with.
Hi,
So sorry, I accidentally hit enter and posted the original unfinished post. Here's what the post should have been like:
I'm trying to format an ebook using Word because the original formatting is really terrible and hard to read. For example, in Microsoft reader it looks like this:
Example example example example example----------------(margin is here)
example
example example example example example
example
example example example example example.

Example example example example example---------------- (margin is here)
example example example example example
example example example example example.
Currently, I manually delete the unwanted spacing but its really time consuming. Is there an easier way to do this? Also, I want it to be "justified" but after converting back to Microsoft Reader files using the Word add-on, certain parts of text ends up like this:
Example example (ridiculous spacing) example (ridiculous spacing) example example (ridiculous spacing) example (ridiculous spacing) example (ridiculous spacing) example example example example.
Rookie,
- hope someone can solve my dilemma. Thank you.
The way I do this is
1. replace ALL paramark paramark (2 of them) with @@
2. replace ALL paramark with space
3. replace ALL " " (2 spaces) with " " (1 space)
4. repeat step 3 until no more replaced
5. replace all @@ with paramark
All that on backup copy and if OK save as original.
The CTRL + * was for the purpose of seeing the paragraph marks in the document (you should have a button on the toolbar that allows you to toggle it). It had nothing to do with the F/R dialog box, it was just so you could see what was in the doc.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I think I just figured step 1 out and OMG all the useless paragraph spacing is gone! But I still haven't figured out deleting the useless spacing between lines. For example:
Example example (useless spacing) example example.
As for the styles, I'm still not done reading the FAQ so I'll tell ya if I understand the FAQ once I'm done. And I don't get mmfell's way of doing it. But I'm very very amazed with the results so far. Thank you so much.
Rookie,
- yawn.... it's 12.20 am in Malaysia now. See ya 2morro.
Actually, Anne, on 2003 it does work, even if typed in with the SHIFT key initially. Then select, go to Format > Change Case, and choose Title Case, and it replaces with correct capitals.
Or, is it a case that this old codger has missed something (again). ;)
Hi,
Actually manually changing the first line doesn't take too long, I just highlight all the text go to the Paragraphs box and set the indentation. But you're right, Styles is easier. Uh, who is Anne? And uh, the headers in my document are all full letter like; CHAPTER, I want to change it to Chapter but I don't know how to create a Style like that; I can't find the setting.
Rookie.
Here is the story of Anne Troy (http://www.allexperts.com/ep/1058-55275/Microsoft-Word/Anne-Troy.htm). Great, funny, witty, and generally loveable person, and visits here regularly. The book I referenced was Dreamboat on Word.
Select the text, go to Format > Change Case, and then choose appropriate option (Title Case seems the logical one for you). If it is Header, then you should only need to do that for each section Header. If only one section, then you are done.
Yeah...but you know it always starts the same...
:dialog:
...and heats up the same...
...and ends up the same...

To delete the extra space, in the Find box type in two spaces with the spacebar. Then in Replace box, type just one space with the spacebar. Then click: "Replace all".

Hi,
I'm not getting the F/R dialog box. CTRL + * , in order to press * I need to press SHIFT, right? So was what you meant: CTRL + SHIFT + * ? I'm sorry, but I just can't get the dialog box. FYI, I'm using Word 2003. As for Style sheets, could you guide me through the process? Thanks.
Rookie,
- I'm such a newbie :superbiggr:
Alright, shades. It's clear that you must want something, but what????
Hi, Rookie!
Try my new "extreme" tutorial on Styles. It's VERY cool...even if I do say so myself.
http://www.officearticles.com/tutorials/
:curtsey:
NO CAN DO on the changing the text from all upper case to title case UNLESS it is upper case as a result of a style. However! You can record a macro (assign it to a toolbar button) that does this:
Shift+Ctrl+Right arrow (to select a word)
Format-->Change Case (select Title)
Right arrow to deselect the text
(stop recording)
Then, you can do a find for the style, find it, hit the macro button, hit find again.
