Hi gizzer,
I've found a few listing of searchable newspaper and magazine archives
that may be of use.
The first is ibiblio
(http://www.ibiblio.org/slanews/internet/archives.html), with a rather
large list of papers in the US and worldwide. Prices per article
vary, but most seem to be around $2 per article retrieved.
Another site is eLibrary (http://ask.elibrary.com), with a good free
search engine, and a 7 day free trial for retrieving articles.
Also, NewsLibrary (http://www.newslibrary.com/nlsite/), has a capable
search engine, but I'm unable to determine if it's free or not. (Note
that this site doesn't work well with the Mozilla browser.)
Finally, the Library of Congress maintains a page with links to a
number of different online archives.

I hope that gives you a good start on your research, good luck!
