Spin and Mohawk help?

Published by: jane 2009-01-09
  • My coach is away for a while, but she told me to try my one footed and scratch spin. I got my one footed spin alright, but I was planning to try a scratch spin. How would I go about doing that? And how do I get my spin faster, more in the center, and more revolutions?

And in my mohawk, its going great, its just sometimes I over rotate and go in a circle. Can anyone help me fix that?

    Thanks
    =D

  • Well, I am working on my 1 foot spin and kind of my scratch spin off the side too! I think that I could help you with your mohawks tho- probably not really the spins sorry :( -my coach told me that for your mohawk you need to make sure you 'check' your arm across and when you finish. this will help you not over rotate! :D That's about all I can help you with, sorry :( I hope you get it quickly!!!

  • okay to center your spin straighten you knees a lot you may feel like its straight, but a lot of the time isn't. Faster? Bring your arms in quicker, and then hold them in tight. Also, make sure that leg is ALL the way around not like hanging out there. Oh and the Mohawk, checking after you turn ( aka checking means to turn your head fast and dont over bend your keens, have more control. )

  • A one foot spin can be done in 2 positions - with the freeleg tucked in or the freeleg crossed (a scratch spin) - so you are correct. In order to perform the scratch spin, you will need more speed by pushing extra hard on the entry and you need to be able to spin for about 3 counts with your freeleg open to the side before you pull it in across. Your arms and freeleg should pull in together and then push them down together. Here is a link to a great explanation of spin technique: http://www.skatejournal.com/spin.html
    Inline Skate Turns::
When your spin is complete, weight the leading skate, turn the trailing skate 180 degrees, re-weight both skates & you have performed a Mohawk.

And another on centering your spins: http://www.iceskatingworld.com/library/a...

As for your mohawks, you must check your arms and shoulders in order to stop your rotation. If doing a right inside mohawk, you will need to check your left arm/shoulder - that means it should be in front of your body when you are backwards in the mohawk. And for the left inside mohawk, you will need to check your right arm/shoulder - that means it should be in front of your body when you are backwards in the mohawk.

  • a one foot spin IS a scratch spin.. I think maybe you are confused as to what is what...

Glide forward across the ice on the inside edge of one skate. Keep the other leg, your free foot, lifted off the ice. Travel in a clockwise motion if you are skating on your left foot. Use a counter-clockwise motion if you are skating on your right foot.
    Step
    2
Bring the free foot directly next to the skating foot and turn it out until it makes a 90-degree angle, perpendicular to your skating foot. The heel of your free foot should point at the middle of your skating foot.
    Step
    3
Place the free foot down on the ice and shift your weight to that leg.
    Step
    4
Lift your original skating foot off the ice by bending your knee.
    Step
    5
Turn your body straight in line with your new skating foot. You should glide backwards on your new skating foot, traveling on the inside edge.

  • the best way to learn to center yourself is to make sure your freeleg is extended properly and to practice lots! i dont know how to explain the whole centering process but mabey you should get one of the other skaters at your club/group to help show you. i always hated spining because i suck at centering myself :( lol. im working on a flying camel now and its quite obvious that i havnt been practicing my spins till recently.... but anyways just keep trying over and over and over again and do not get discouraged! (and dont give up trying to spin and only spin during your lessons, trust me i know from expirience that that is a BAD idea!!!)
