In the second stage if the child is forced and pushed hard to learn this trait, the child will rebel and ruin the learning. This will later in life lead to the child being socially withdrawn and shameful when there is a mistake. If the learning is achieved then the child will be confident and take mistakes well and learn from them.
The 3rd stage is similar to the second. If the child succeeds and/or is rewarded in a leadership role often and is not harshly criticized for mistakes, then the stage will be complete. Then later in life it will be easier to make new friends and be confident in their choices. If failed then they will be timid and secluded, never sure of their answers. Stage 5 is arguably the most important. Erikson describes this as identity emerges out of an identity crisis. The child should be allowed to wander to try and achieve their own identity. If the child is restricted the identity crisis will never be achieved. According to erikson they will never be fully happy then.
