almost lead me to believe my system has been hacked.
1) my IP address has changed. nothing new there in itself. Cox Cable does change them every several weeks. but in the 7-8 years i have been a Cox Cable customer, the IP's for my area have always been 68.xx.xxx.xxx, this new IP is 98.xx.xxx.xxx, and a who is trace which in the past has been pretty close to my neighborhood, is now in a completely different state.
2) and this bothers me the most, when i attempt to enable the My Address protection in Outposts Attack Detection, by checking the box, i lose internet connectivity. if i uncheck the box, disabling the My Address protection, internet connectivity returns.
here is the helpfile description of My Address Attack Detection protection:
A common attack aimed to take over the local computer's IP address, then impersonate it on a network, and take over its connections to falsely assign the remote computer's activity to the local system. This problem can be a result of incorrectly written software and in those cases can be ignored. [jboss-user] [Persistence, JBoss/CMP, Hibernate, Database :: Hibernate, Database] - LazyInitializationException in strange circumstances public void setSeasons( Set< Season > seasons ) | { | m_seasons = new http://lists.jboss.org/pipermail/jboss-user/2006-October/019772.htmlHOME |
An example of an attack of this class is Snork.
if something is not wrong, then why would enabling this protection kill my connection? it's almost as if Outpost is protecting my system from itself.
i am probably stressing over nothing, and it's just a lack of understanding on my part.
so if anyone has this figured out, could you please help bring me up to speed?
thanks,
Mike
delete all connection in the lan settings then restart the system
then go to apps and open some rules and see if the address in the macros match your ips
if doesn't work
- could be or isp is keeping you inside a firewall to (ie in cable nets there is no trace back route to you) or have a "keep alive" feature so you must unmark that attack detection option Strange Horizons Reviews: The Innocent Mage (Kingmaker Kingbreaker :: Strange Horizons is a free weekly online magazine devoted to publishing Before long, through a bizarre set of circumstances, he finds himself not only http://www.strangehorizons.com/reviews/2007/09/the_innocent_ma.shtmlHOME |

okay, i was able to follow this, but i do not have a single rule that references my local address (which i think is odd), and i did look in the macros. i simply don't have many global rules. check that, i found a DCOM rule that referenced the Local_Network macros, and they are the 98.xx.xxx.xxx numbers. so how is that significant? what does it tell me?

sorry, i haven't the slightest idea of what you mean here. the My Address protection option is presently unchecked, as that is what keeps my connection live. and not to be argumentative towards you, i have put my old IP in a what's my Ip webpage, and had a google map come UNcomfortably close to my actual neighborhood. while i don't understand the underlying technology, it was closer than i would have liked. this 98. IP is as i said after plugging it in to what is my Ip is another state entirely, maybe good, but puzzling.

no no router here. i do have a cheap hardware firewall called Alpha-Shield, that frankly i believe it's biggest value is that of a convienent disconnect from the internet switch.
i appreciate your reply, it is looking as though after removing the IP and rebooting that the new IP number is legit, but i still wonder why i cannot take advantage of the My Addresss Attack Detection protection
