i've done a couple of studio shoots and used shadow to create dramatic effects. is there a specific technique or way the lights should be used to get rid of shadow completely?

Depends what you're shooting, really. And where you want shadow gone from. Are you talking about no shadow behind the object or person? No shadow on their face? Can you post an example pic? Old Tucson Studios::

You should research 3 point lighting. Setting two lights at a 45 degree angle from the subject (one softer than the other) and the camera in the middle. Make sure both lights are a little above the camera lens. The 3rd light should be projected on the back of the subjects head and shoulders.

i want to lose the shadow both behind and on the subject. sorry, i don't have any photos i can show online
You need to use a softbox to light your subject and it needs to be positioned as near to the lens axis as possible. That will give a flat, soft light and kill the shadows on the subject.
The background needs to be flat and plain. Wash it with two floods -one at the top, one at the bottom (soft boxes work OK). Balance the power output of your lights so the relative light values match.
To get rid of shadows you are trying to create a soft even light - like on an overcast day. Does that help?
