Using SMTP mail - reduce load?

If I setup the forums to use SMTP mail and have it setup to mail via a different server, would this make any difference to the load on the main server? Worth doing?

  • I don't know of any way to check mail volume other than looking at /var/log/maillog and counting...

That said, sending through a separate server is ALWAYS going to reduce load. If you send through the local machine your server has to accept the message into the pending queue, move it to the active queue, look up the MX record for the delivery domain, make a connection attempt to the server from the MX record, transmit the message, and then accept the response. If the response is negative, that message is moved into the deferred queue and is retried later, thus causing the entire process to repeat. If sending through a remote server you only need to worry about the first part.

In addition, if you have a valid SPF record setup for your domain, it probably does NOT include sending mail from your web server (unless that is also your mail server). Sending through the server that holds the MX record for your domain (assuming that it IS listed on the SPF record) will cause your message to be less likely to be caught as spam.

  • honestly not sure.. i've been spoilt by whm/cpanel and their mail manager queue etc which has stats etc heh

  • Potentially yes, but depends on how mail intensive your existing loads are I would think.

  • Is there anyway to tell how many emails are sent out per day?

My forums have around 3 million posts and over 2000 active users per day. I think most rely on email notification for threads and PMs. There are just over 2000 posts per day. Does that sound like there would be a considerable load on the mail system?
