My car clicks instead of starting. The belt turns, tries to start, have tried to jump it. new water pump, thermostat, tensioner, but it still clicks...would this be the starter or just the solenoid?
Clicking, not one clunk or click is more likely a low battery. Have the battery charged and tested after cleaning the cable clamps and battery posts. Trying to start a car with a low battery overheats the starter motor and if not fixed will ruin the starter.
You have gone about the round circles spent a lot of money and time but the problem basically - I think - is with the starter motor.
Take it to a rewinding shop. They will test and tell you or repair it for a nominal charge.
Jump will only work if the battery is bad. Check the grounding wires - sometimes that is faulty or loose contact - not enough juice getting through to the starter.
Ive had this problem with my car and two of my friends. theres a few things it could be. First you will want to get your battery and alternator tested at aoutozone or napa or a car parts store where you live. if those check out then make sure the battery cable connection on the starter is clean and clear of corrosion for a good contact. Now you will want to hit the solenoid with a hammer while trying to start it because it could be stuck. if ti si hen its time for a new solenoid. It is not that much more expensive to get a new starter with the solenoid so if you do need to replace it might as well get the whole new thing Engine wont turn over, solenoid clicks, hammer tapping starter :: 13 posts - 9 authors - Last post: May 24, 2004Today I got stuck at my local autoparts store. Without my Haynes manual, and not being mechanically inclined I had no idea what my problem http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/engine-wont-turn-over-solenoid-clicks-hammer-tapping-starter-gets-engine-turnin-76373/HOME |
The solenoid is what makes the clicking noise.
Sounds to me like all you have done so far is to randomly throw parts at it hoping to get lucky and stumble across why your engine won't start.
You have wasted lots of money replacing good parts.
Remove the starter and bring it into any major automotive parts store and have it tested before you do anything else.
Many starters have the solenoid as part of the starter. If your solenoid is separate from the starter, remove it and bring it in to have it tested too.
Also, check your battery cables. Corroded cables could restrict the current going to the starter. The corrosion can go down inside the insulation where it can't be seen.
Sounds like the solenoid. Here's a quick test. Tap on the starter with a hammer. Sometimes the starter sticks and won't engage the flywheel. If the car starts after you'll know it's the starter.
5 bucks says its a battery cable. take a good set of jumper cables and go from the battery positive to the starter lug negative to the block. if it starts you just gotta figure out wich cable it is.
