What is the difference between a board foot and a square foot when it comes to hardwood flooring?
A square foot is 12X12 inches square.
I am assuming by board foot you mean a linear foot which is 12 inches in a straight line.
A square foot is 12"x12" or 144 square inches. A board foot is just a running foot of a board no matter what the width. Of course, for the wider boards, the cost per board foot is higher. A square foot is figured as follows:
Say you have a 4" wide, 60" long, piece of wood. Multiply 4 x 60= 240, then divide by 144 =1.67 Square feet. If you bought two pieces of wood this way, you would have 1.67 + 1.67 =3.34 SF
The same piece of wood figured in board feet is as follows. Thickness of board x width of board x length of board divided by 144. So say the board from the above equation is 1/2" thick. So you would have .5 x 4 x 60 =120 divided by 144 =.83 board feet. If you bought two pieces of wood, the same dimensions, then you would have .83 + .83 = 1.66 Bdft
