Rap is essentially talking to a beat.
Hip Hop is dance music.
R&B is love-making music.
Rap is more "gangsta" hip-hop is more of a bouncy beat and sweet yrics and rand b is kinda slow music type of rap
Rap is both aggresive and defensive. It's people defending themselves, via music, by acting as an aggresor towards any opposing them.
R&B is smooth, emotional, often a proclamation of love or various other feelings. It is rarely aggresive.

Hip Hop, contrary to popular belief, is all encompasing. Hip Hop is everything within the urban culture. It includes both rap and r&b, as well as all subcategories of those. Hip Hop has been said to originate in the 70's, and then it included 4 main categories: Rapping, DJing, Graffitti, and Breakdancing. (And sometimes beatboxing).
Rap and R&B are seperate categories which fall under Hip Hop.
R&B is legitimate. The others...
rap-is just that, usually covered in foul language and more than likely has a fast beat. artists like 50 cent and tupac are in this category
hip hop-more of a "neo soul" vibe to this music, usually artists like talib kweli and common fall into this category...
r&b- is rhythm and beat, which is a slower pace genre of the two above, with cleaner language and a softer vibe to it, artists like aaliyah, mya, luther vandross are in this category....
and usually if you type a "song" title into a google search engine, the artist will come up along with the song, that way you can figure out from there which genre it falls under! i hope ive helped!

Rap is crap.
Hip-hop is dead so there is no difference. They are all gangstas now for the most part. If you want to categorize I would say guys like Nas and Jay-Z, Outkast, Eminem (as a solo artist). If you can read it as poetry, then I consider it hip-hop. If not I classify it as rap.
R&B used to classify soul music. Used to be a blanket term for jazz, blues and gospel. Now it is more contemporary R&B, like Mary J., Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Ne-Yo, X-tina, et cetera. The gap between what people call Pop and R&B is pretty much gone. Some call JT pop, some call him R&B, same goes for legends like MJ and Prince.

Honestly, these days music is way too hard to try and catergorize! I mean now you have rock stars that want to be
rappers, and rappers who think they can sing....As for your question....Rap is supposed to be simple verse to music, R&B is what it is, Rhythm and Blues, and Hip-Hop is just a merge of the two created in order to get a wider audience and more sales, I assume. Music is too ecclectic now to give them such a vague catergory. So, I say you should start out listening to top forty music and go from there.
