In the US, there are two tracks to becoming a nurse:
the Associate's degree program and the Bachelor's degree program. The associates degree is a two year program and the bachelor's degree is a four year program.
After you finish the bachelor's program and graduate, you can put the initials B.S. (Bachelor's of Science) next to your name.
When you take the state board exam for nurses and pass the exam, you are then officially an R.N. You cannot take the exam without having graduated from the Associates and Bachelors program first. After you pass the test, you can then call yourself an R.N. with either a Bachelors in Science degree, R.N.,B.S. or simply an R.N. Most R.N.'s simply use the initials, R.N. and do not specifiy their educational level. Why the NIU School of Nursing? than 600 students in baccalaureate, graduate and RN-BS Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing http://www.niu.edu/niunurse/difference.htmHOME |
There is only one Bachelor's degree you can get to qualify for the nursing exam and that is a Bachelor's of Science. There are no R.N.s with a Bachelor's of Arts.
When you start working, whether you have a two-year degree or a four-year degree may or may not make a difference in how much you make and the responsibilities you have as an R.N. It depends on where you work and what position.]
As far as declaring your major, they all sound like they are the same line of study to me. You might want to contact the registrar's office or counseling office for clarification.
