Learning to identify horses can take years, and even the best can get stumped. Most "modern" breeds are a combination of different breeds and so consequently you can get a horse of one breed that looks an awful lot like it might possibly be this breed or that breed or part this and part that. Every breed has a breed standard from which there is some variation. Some breeds have a very narrow type, while others have a wide range. Some breeds allow for outcrosses while other's have closed studbooks. Many breeds have several organazations that register them, often with different goals and standards. For example there is the Foundation Quarter Horse Registry and the American Quarter Horse Association. FQHR horses are normally fairly recognizable as such. Some AQHA horses look more like TB's have even seen a few that look like morgans (we had a registered QH and a registered morgan at the same time once, and the two looked identical). Another example is the Colonial Spanish horse. There are several registries and different names for basically the same breed. CS horses also come in three types, with in-between types also occuring, they are the Heavy/Northern type, The median/andalusian type, and the Southwest/Barb type. They are registered by the Horse of the Americas Registry, The American Indian Horse Registry (as original indian horses, division "O"), The Spanish Mustang Registry as "Spanish Mustangs" and the Southwest Spanish Mustang Association as "Spanish Mustangs, The Spanish Barb Breeders Association as Spanish Barbs (they only register the southwest/barb type) and the American Heritage Horse Association, for foundation SMR & SSMA lines. Another example is Haflingers, of which there is a "sport" type and a "work" type.
I reccomend starting with Arabian and Iberian type (these are very distinct types) that way you will be able to see the influence fairly easily. Iberian type has some variations but is basically the same (there are quite a few different "Iberian" breeds). Then I would move to draft breeds and types as draft blood is fairly easy to recognize. Read the breed descriptions, look at pictures, videos of how they move. If possible find someone near you that breeds or has horses of the type you are researching and look at it. I would also recommend looking at haflingers as there types are fairly distincive and is easy to recognize for most people.
