I am a freshman in high school and I am thinking about becoming a Marine after high school. I was just wondering if anyone who has been in the Marines can give me any advice on what I can do now. Thnx! Get in the best possible shape you can. I took track my senior year (it helped). Long distance running is good, as well as sprinting. Lots of pushups and pullups. Endurance will be more important than strength, but strength-training is good too.
Don't do any drugs. Seriously. You don't want to go that route.
Memorize your social security number.
don't wait to prepare, join JROTC now and you will be better prepared to join up or continue on to ROTC in college.
Do not ever thank someone. Thanking your Drill Instructor is like asking to get into trouble. They are not there to be thanked, they are there to train new recruits. Basically just doing their job. You have to be a certain weight when you get in, have to do so many push ups, sit ups, and run for 2 miles in a certain amount of time. Honestly the best thing you can do right now is run, do push-ups, sit-ups, pull ups, chin ups, and get yourself in shape. Discipline yourself, and when it gets closer to your time to go in I suggest setting your clock for 4 am. To at least get yourself ready to get up early in the morning. Don't worry though..when you are in you won't have time to think..you just do. MySpace.com - Marcos - 27 - Male - Oxnard, CALIFORNIA - www.myspace.com :: What am I gonna do without the Corps? Check this out..hope it helps. If not just go google: Marine Corp Boot Camp, there are videos out there too. Have fun!
I suggest go about your life as you do now, the D.I.s (Drill Instructors) once at M.C.R.D (Marine Corps Recruit Depot) will train and prepare you with everything you need to learn/know.
I suggest you attend College perhaps for one year, this will look good and help you advance to PFC instead of graduating Private at boot camp, it will help you achieve rank easier.
Keep these few things in mind:
1.Be active.
2.Excise, play sports.
3.Do not smoke.
4.Eat healthy.
5.Learn to be independent.
Practice your basic life skills - things like ironing, cleaning and making beds with hospital corners. You'll be doing much of that every morning very quickly - don't learn while you're there at great personal discomfort and the detriment of your platoon.
Get a job, too - fast food industry is good, as their employees are used to working quickly. It'll get you used to stress and instill a sense of urgency in you.
I'd get more into the fitness side of things, but that's the obvious thing.
Stay in shape. Get good grades. And go to school first. Or do NROTC. If you wanna be one of the few and proud, you might as well become an Officer. Plus, you get a 4 year degree out of it for free. Here's a good site to look at for more information on NROTC. And if you don't like that, the only advice I can give you is to prepare yourself more mentally, than physically. But don't think you can slack, physically. Also, talk to a recruiter. They can give you so much more.
Depending how serious you are, I would try to get at least a partial college education and also be as healthy and fit as possible. not just wieght training but PT too.
My advice is go down to the recruitment office and there should be a delayed entry program meeting once a week. They will give you all the basic exercises and knowledge that you'll need to know for bootcamp. The longer you're in there the better prepared you will be.
