I am voting an absentee ballot and was wondering what would happen if I sent it in now and something happened to the candidate before the election? Who would run on short notice? Would I be able to vote again? Would they change the election date? Nobody at work had ever thought about this & nobody could answer it. Does anyone know? Gosh I guess they would have the runner up candidate with the most votes. Or if your candidate had the most votes perhaps his running mate(VP). Good question!
If the person had died early enough to run another candidate and change the names on the ballot, then there wouldn't be a problem. Otherwise, it depends on the state/office, but generally someone is appointed to fill the seat until a special election can be held.
The most famous example of this happening was when former Attorney General John Ashcroft lost his US Senate seat in 2001 to Mel Carnahan, who died two weeks before the election. Mel's wife was appointed to the seat and two years later there was a special election.
Good question. I have no answer for you. I'm hoping there are laws in place to address this should it ever happen.
A question to UGK: Is that the change Obama is endorsing? A racial vote for president. Are you saying the only change you are interested in is seeing a non-white president?

About a quarter of they way down you will find a highlighted example from back to U,S Grant. Basically it says you are voting for a party. Not really an individual. I still don't think this answers your question definitively though.

That's a mighty fine question. It's never come up, and therefore has never been addressed. The Constitution doesn't cover it either. There may be a law regarding absentee ballots but I don't know about it. My guess is that you wouldn't be able to vote again for logistical reasons (what if the candidate passes away two days before the election), but then they wouldn't be able to print new ballots at that point anyway.
