When did you first realize your love of literature?

Published by: jane 2009-01-08

  • What is the story behind your love for lit?

  • I started loving literature when I read Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice. I was 13, and practically in love with the plot, characters, and couldn't put it down for months.

  • When I was a child I had zero interest in reading. My mom had always encouraged me to read and had kept my "library" filled with books she'd thought I'd enjoy, buying a book weekly, even though I never read any of them.

I remember going into her private library one day and picking up The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber and deciding to read it because the cover interested me. That's when I fell in love with literature. I started sneaking into her library and taking her books without permission and reading them privately.

Eventually, she caught on and donated my children's books to charity and started giving me books from her own library - she still does it today even though I've grown up and moved out and that is, really, what keeps my love of literature alive.

  • I was raised by my great-grandparents.

My great-grandmother taught me to read when I was 3 or 4 years old. And I'm not talking about "See Spot run." I'm talking about the classics. By the time I entered the first grade I'd read most of the classics in literature. I've been a voracious reader ever since.

  • When I was 4 I recieved my first Dr. Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham. I made my mom read it over and over again to me almost every day until I'm pretty sure she got sick of it and tried to get me to read through it. When I finally got the hang of it I made her sit and listen to me read it almost everynight. I just loved the way the words flowed together and the story line made me laugh. I even remember asking for green eggs and ham on more that one occasion. When my mom really got sick of it after about a week of me slurring through it she bought me all the Dr. Seuss books she could find. I don;t know what triggered it but since then I've pretty much been the family Bookworm.

  • When I first read Hamlet during my junior year of high school. I mean, I have always read and enjoyed it, but not like this. THIS was eye-opening, and made me realize that I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing something with literature.

  • A book called the circus when I was five, after that there was no stopping me Enid Blyton another early fav.wanted to be one of famous five or secret seven.

  • i never have

  • It all began with Nancy Drew. I loved reading about her, I wanted to be like her or George. I liked it when she outsmarted the bad guys.

  • I am the oldest of six children and when we were younger everyone was very outgoing, into sports, funny, etc. Not me. I was shy and quiet and the wallflower type. My Mom always tried to get me out of the house and outdoors with my sisters. They were falling out of trees, getting bumped and bruised and teeth knocked out. I didn't want any part of that! I am just not the athletic type, never have been. I was always trying to "escape" from them (even though I love them, don't get me wrong!) I would rather sit in my room and read or write my own stories/poetry. I loved Nancy Drew, Little House on the Prairie -- stuff like that. I hated Math in school but reading and writing came pretty easily to me for some reason. I wrote for my high school paper -- winning an award and scholarship for an article I wrote. I wrote for my hometown newspaper for a while and my first novel has been accepted and should be released here in the next few weeks.
