looks fine the next time i start the xbox with the xbmc cd.
this happened with an earlier version of xbmc but then the
background was black.

there's no mystery xbmc can't be reliably run of a cd- it needs to write certain files to the q:\ drive which is on the cd and so can't be done- usually it will work the first time- but like you say the skin background goes a bit wierd on a reboot, until the settings in e:\tdata\face008\ are cleared
run it of the hd and there won't be any problems
