For my live chat application I plan to use another port than 6667-7000 since they are mostly blocked by firewalls. Avoid file-sharing risks - Page 2 | Macworld:: Allow All Incoming Connections: This default option blocks no traffic. Wich ports (not counting 80) are usually free and recommended to use so people behind firewalls won't get stuck ? What i'll do is just tie another IP / domain and put the chat on it using port 80....
hard to say....
there is no rule about this.

You are pretty stuck on this... All the ports that are open on a firewall have another purpose (whatever that may be) Any open ports that aren't needed is bad administation. I recommend you post in your FAQ a "Are you behind a firewall?" section and report what's needed to be done to enable your chat. However if one of my users came to me and asked for 4 ports to be nailed open for chat... wouldn't be pretty :D
