Which was the first US space station to be launched?
Published by: anonym 2009-01-08

  • Sky lab was the first US space station to be launched and it was in orbit from 1973 to 1979.

It was first launched on 14th may 1973 into a 235 nautical mile (435 km) orbit. But problems during the launching created a huge power deficit and some problems that required extensive damage repair by the space crew. If this wasn't reapired properly by the crew, the plastic insulation inside the station would have melted, releasing poisonous gas and making Skylab completely uninhabitable. The first crew stayed at the sky lab for 28 days and then tw other crews went during 1973 and 1974.

NASA considered use of the existing Apollo/Saturn material for launching a second Skylab B station in May 1973, but decided to donate all the hardware to museums.

  • Skylab, it was made from a Saturn V fuel tank they modified it enough using leftover Apollo parts to make it habitable. It was sent into space in May 1973 and during launch a heat cover over the lab was ripped off. But then in one of the three missions they fixed the issue. The last mission to Skylab was in 1974. Before they left had prepared it for the space shuttle which was to first fly in 1979 instead of 1981 and it was to boost its orbit. But that didn't happen in 1979 it got caught in a meteor shower and was knocked out of orbit over Australia.
