i was just wondering about the difficulties of raising rat litters. because i have three male rats so have no intentions of breeding, but one of my friends is thinking of breeding her rat-i.e gettin him a female cagemate and then seperating them again. she thinks it will be easy and she can just keep the babies or sell them to a local pet shop where she got them. i disagree anyway, but surely if the boy n girl came from the same pet shop even tho at diff times they would be related??

Have your friend read through all of that and try and say with a straight face that it's easy and cheap. That's not even counting the challenges of dealing with a pregnant doe.

Also, if left with the female, the pair will NOT stop breeding, and rat gestation is so short, that it's possible for a female rat to be nursing TWO litters at once, and pregnant with a third!

  • I think the problem with many people(especially children), is that they think that they will make a quick buck with breeding animals. The truth is, most people lose more money than they make when breeding.

The other issue is finding homes. Most pet stores buy their animals from large suppliers, or just breed their own. It is highly unlikely that a pet store will buy some kids baby rats.

Chances are, she will breed her rats and find out there are no homes for them. She will either end up begging one of the rat rescues to please take her litter of 10-20 rats, or have to buy more cages, food, etc and keep them herself, or sell them as snake food. Rescues are over run with unwanted animals(rats included), there are not enough homes for them all.

  • doubt it, they grow fast. your Friend should get her own male, since they two will usually raise the young together. My rats always took care of the young. Mom would go play, while the dad stayed close to the young. it was really amazing.

  • Most pets shops in an area would most likely use the same local breeder so likely they would be related in some way if not actually brother and sister. Most pets shops won't accept animals as a one off and tend to stay with one breeder. Also bringing even more animals into the world when its by no means guarenteed that they will all find good homes is wrong in my opinion. Is your friend prepared to keep up to 10 or more babies if they cannot find homes for them. Including the money and space to keep a dozen or more adult rats? Vets fees will need to be taken into account. Are the rats their intenting to breed healthly and have good genetics? Rats are prone to cancers and respiritory problems and so getting good initial breeding stock is essential. Raising litters of rats is much more difficult than simply keeping them as pets. Introducing males and females can be problematic and can lead to fighting and injuries, which require vetinary attention. If the female does become pregnant (usually the easy bit) then she will need nutritional supplements and care during the pregnacy and regular check ups at the vet. Birth complications may also require a trip to the vets. The new mum needs a dark and quiet place to raise her litter as the slightest disturbance or stress can cause her to kill and eat them. Rats will sell for a few quid so don't expect to make a profit, infact quit the opposite. Your friend needs to do through research and talk to an experienced breeder if they really still want to go ahead.
