The Undercurrent | Defining Life: The Moral Case for Stem Cell :: If we simply compare embryos with human beings, it seems absurd to regard them This premise is at the crux of every argument against stem cell research. http://the-undercurrent.com/paper/defining-life-the-moral-case-for-stem-cell-research/HOME | I need to know about this for my American Government class.

It's a moral issue, but people need to evolve. Stem cell research could come up with cures for millions of people. But then the pharmaceutical companies would go broke.
the only thing they are against is federal funding for new stem cell lines
i don't think it's necessarily the concept of stem cell research they're against it's the mode in which to obtain the stem cells
I'm conservative and against abortion, but support stem cell research. Ask yourself this, are you gonna get pregnant just so you can have an abortion? probably not. honestly, if you miscarry, they're gonna throw the baby in the trash (not literally). might as well put it to good use. The ends don't justify the means.
Ill tell you why, but first, you have to have a little background.
Stem cells are cells that have the potential to become different types of cells (nerve, bone, tissue, blood...). About Stemcell Research:: If embryonic stem cell research prevails through the religious attacks the overwhelming amount of people saved will cause the knowledge of such research to http://www.truth-saves.com/Stem_Cells.phpHOME |
There are two groups of stem cells. Pluripotent stem cells have the possibility of becoming any cell in the body. For example, when an egg is fertalized, that one cell divides and divides and eventually becomes every type of tissue in the body. These stem cells are typically called 'embryonic stem cells' because they are harvested from embryos.
Adult stem cells are stem cells that can become different types of cells, but not EVERY type. For example, cells found in the umbical cord can become bone marrow or blood cells, but cannot become nerve cells.
There are several differences between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. As of now, the only way to get embryonic stem cells is to harvest them from a living fetus. Some people are against this because it kills the fetus in the process.
On the other hand, adult stem cells can be harvested from any person without causing any harm. The downside is, as mentioned above, the potential from adult stem cells is not as great.
Adult stem cells have produced over 100 cures. There is not one single cure developed from embryonic stem cells, in fact, they are more likely to cause cancer than to cure a disease. Another draw back is that by the time a person needs a stem cell treatment, they are no longer a fetus. The only way to get embryonic stem cells would be to clone that person.
My opinion - the research focus should continue to be on adult stem cells and not embryonic stem cells.
