Why are some girls obsessed with their sororities?
Published by: smith 2009-01-09

  • Tons of people at my uni are in frats and sororities- making me feel in someway that I'm missing out on a "secret" something. My roomy is OBSESSED with hers- always talking about it- it's her life. My view on them is that they are shallow, a waste of money, and time. I'm not trying to be rude about it, if any of you are in one or was, but what do people get out of this? I can't help but view it as a congregation of people who are too insecure to stand on their own two feet... am I being too cynical? What do you think?

  • After you graduate from college, your fellow sorority and fraternity members will be an excellent source of job prospects. Enthusiasm for your friends is how some people react. Treat her and them as just a close group of friends, you are permitted to wish you had friends that were that close to you.

  • Actually, it's quite clear that you are trying to be rude. If you have such horrible issues with your roommate, why don't you apply for a different roommate? If you picked her, then why are you insulting her on the internet?

I did not rush until my sophomore year, meaning I spent one year on campus without any sorority affiliation. I hated sorority life, too. The next year, my roommate begged me to rush with her. It ended up being the best thing she's ever done for me.

Imagine having an entire group of people there to help you in a crisis. This past summer, my mom nearly passed away. I have literally no other family except for my 87-year-old grandmother, who suddenly became my responsibility. (And at that same time, a hurricane hit and we were without power in a flooded house. Talk about a crisis.) My sisters not only provided the comfort I so desperately needed, but many of them were nursing and pre-med majors or had family who were nurses, doctors, social workers, etc who could answer my questions and give me advice. They helped me plan her funeral, per her doctor's suggestion and helped me figure out how to get my grandmother on medicaid so I could afford to put her in a nursing home. They even understood when I told them I might have to drop the sorority.

But those of you who hate Greek life will accuse me of not being able to stand on my own two feet. Just remember, I literally have no other family.. No aunts, uncles, counsins, father, etc. I guess you think I should have been able to deal with this situation all on my own.

Another sister moved across the state to come here. One night after a late, late dinner at the campus grill, she passed out. Fortunately, her sisters (including myself) were with her. We took her to the nearest hospital and I was in constant contact to her parents, who were a 7 hour drive away. Someone from the sorority was with her at all times until her parents finally arrived.

This happened three more times before the doctors were finally able to identify her problem. I suppose she should have hoped that a kind stranger would take her to the hospital and support her, not to mention contacted her parents.

There's also a sort of comfort in belonging to an organization that has been around for over a century. There's no real way to describe the feeling of participating in traditions that hundreds of thousands of women before you have also done.

Not to mention that it's fun! There's lots of things to do besides the stereotypical "frat party." Greek Week and homecoming competitions, intramural sports, painting and hanging banners, sisterhood retreats, theme parks, socials with fraternities (Where yes, actually, we do things other than drink.. In fact, I don't drink at all and I'm 21.), and tons of other things.

But remember, sisters can't do any of these fun things if they don't maintain mimum GPA. Struggling sisters are paired with a study buddy and given extra help to push them to succeed. Maybe this is why at an overwhelming majority of schools, the all-Greek average is substantially higher than the all-student average.

And they make community service fun! From fundraising competitions the other sororities and fraternities participate in to going to the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind to throwing holiday parties for the blind children, sorority women definitely feel connected to their communities.

Furthermore, it is an amazing networking tool. After graduation, sorority women have access to a large database of sisters in their profession all across the world. You will also learn leadership skills, either through workshops on how to ace that important interview or through taking one of the many leadership positions available in Greek life. Could this be why 85% of the Fortune 500 executives belong to a fraternity or sorority?

As far as money goes, according to the United States Office of Education, less than 2% of the average Greek college student's expenses go to their fraternity or sorority dues. You have to pay to belong to any club. And what about formal? Didn't you have to pay to go to prom? Same concept.

Us sorority women understand that not everyone is interested in our tradition. That's fine. We don't criticize you for not joining a sorority, but you're still insulting us. Who's the insecure one here?

  • No you are not. Insecure people tend to join the greeks, in order to feel stronger. It is like being a "team" that makes you stronger, and make you feel better than the rest.

  • it dosent matter. your getting exactly the same education as them

  • People who join frats or sororities usually do to form strong bonds with each, personally i'm not part of one myself and i find them kind of pathetic because they're usually ful of plastics and jocks but hey, some people are just like that.
    Let's all live in harmony.
