My grandma has a 2004 Kia Sedona. Yesterday, she went to start her van and it was completely dead. It was jumped and didn't help it so she got a new battery. It now starts but we aren't able to put it in any other gear but PARK. We've tried all the obvious reasons. I didn't know if a security feature would cause this or any mechanical reasons.
On newer vehicles, there is a lock that blocks the shifter from coming out of park until the brake pedal is depressed. This is controlled by the brake light switch. Check and see if the brake lights are coming on when the pedal is pressed. If the brake lights are working, then either the solenoid lock is malfunctioning or the brake light switch is not sending the signal to disengage.
