McCain was offered a release from the POW camp and declined it - He claims he felt if he accepted the release it would send the wrong message to Americans. As military members we took an oath and supported a code that we would avoid caprute at all cost and make every attempt possible to escape from the enemy. What if everyone decided to break their oaths and the codes they took and ignored their responsibilities; how long would order and discipline continue?
They wanted to use him for propaganda. His father was a well known U.S. Navy Admiral. This shows his courage and honor. I don't think Obama would stand that tall! He would never give more than he takes.
You start out with one kind of question then change to a ethics question.
Why Did McCain stay = He felt it was his duty to let others who were there in captivity LONGER be released First.
As for the Ethics part = Not Long.

I am surprised at the answers to this question. What I see is that most people believe that regardless of what oath you take or the code you are expected too follow can be over ridden when you decide to do so. I was not aware codes we were expected too follow and had to sign a statement of understand were discretionary. I agree it was courageous of McCain to support the other prisoners but he broke his oath and code. He could have brought word from prisoners back home and he could have brought the truth of POW prisons home. I was not there nor did I have to face the decisions he had to make but as a Monday Back quarterback I think he sends a wrong message to the thousands of soldiers, sailors and airmen who today are asked to take oaths and support codes of conduct. Should they use their discretion to decide when and where to comply? Washington Wire - WSJ.com : McCain Camp Is Mum on Anti-Obama Book:: Aug 15, 2008 McCain should stay away as far as he can from the book. his brains beat in for 5 years in a POW camp and still be able to be President. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/08/15/mccain-camp-is-mum-on-anti-obama-book/HOME |
Maybe he became a spy and his whole political career he's been feeding information back to the commies!
In the POW camp, they had a code...first in, first out. THere were many others who had been there much longer than he had and he knew that he was only being offered the release b/c his father was a high ranking officer. He did this b/c he was following their code of ethics.
guards with guns, and that's my final answer regis
Because the enemy would use it as propaganda, they still used his actions as propaganda but he felt he did the right thing by waiting for those who were captured before him to be released first, Honor and courage.
The vietnamese called killing someone in a POW camp releasing them. He was probably afraid they would kill him.
McCain stayed in solidarity with his comrades, and because he is an honorable man,and he did not want to be used for propaganda.and since you bring up broken pledges,McCain and obama both took pledges to confine campaign spending to public fundings,Mc Cain has stood by his word ,obie is taking funds from anywhere and everywhere, and pledge be darned, and how bout that Tony Rezko?are you sweating, ,,obie?
sigh...
He stayed in because they offered him a special favor - which is against the Code of Conduct. Report Abuse
I think the upright, moral man he is he saw other guys in alot worse physical condition then he was and he felt like they deserved getting to go home more than he did.
When you discuss military matters you should leave out the 'we' part because if you had ever served you would know better than to say this.
You are such a typical liberal.
What a liberal thing to say. He did something honorable and admirable. He refused to abandon his brethren. So now he's a rule-breaking, irresponsible man. Gotta love the liberal twist.
