  • This topic has been debated for a thousand years and there is no definitive answer. Suffice to say many things led up to the fall of Rome. Among them was that Rome collapsed under the weight of it's bureaucracy.

The Decline of the Roman Empire, leading to the Fall of the Roman Empire, or the Fall of Rome, was the end of the Western Roman Empire. Edward Gibbon, in his famous study The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776), was the first to use this terminology after Montesquieu, but he was neither the first nor the last to speculate on why and when the Empire collapsed. "From the eighteenth century onward," Glen W. Bowersock has remarked,[1] "we have been obsessed with the fall: it has been valued as an archetype for every perceived decline, and, hence, as a symbol for our own fears." It remains one of the greatest historical questions, and has a tradition rich in scholarly interest. In 1984, German professor Alexander Demandt published a collection of 210 theories on why Rome fell, and a number of new theories have emerged since then.[2]

The traditional date of the fall of the Roman Empire is September 4, 476 when Romulus Augustulus, the last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire was deposed by Odoacer. Julius Nepos, the legitimate emperor recognized by the East Roman Empire continued to live in Salona, Dalmatia until he was assassinated in 480.

  • Moral Corruption mostly. The Empire had Christianity which unified the entire empire, yet the decay from the moral imbiguity had gotten so bad that it basically crumbled underneath itself. One of the Emperors (I can't remember his name) split the empire up into 4 sections and gave governance to his 3 (or 4) sons, which was seen as a poor choice (as it seperated the unified people, and divided the empire in a time when internal reconstruction was needed).
