Why do Atheists want to hang out in R&S?

Published by: jane 2009-01-09

  • I'm not trying to be rude or cause problems...I really don't care who is here. But I just thought it was curious that there are so many atheists here in R&S. Why are you here? Can someone be an atheist but still be "spiritual"? What kinds of questions do you atheists ask and answer here?

    Just random curiosity.

  • Every Atheist is different and no one speaks for all. For me, it's to increase my knowledge of the religious mindset and to attempt to correct the wierd ideas some Christians have about Atheists in general. Like being immoral or hating god, etc. Neither are true by the way...

  • Who else would give correct answers?

I'm just here because I enjoy it. And yes, an atheist can be spiritual.
We ask and answer religious/spiritual questions.

  • 1.This is Religion and Spirituality , not Christianity or Theism . There are atheists who are very spiritual, atheists who practice a non-theistic religion like Buddhism, and atheists who are spiritual AND practice a non-theistic religion. Accordingly they have every right to post questions/answers here.
2.Atheists are very much affected by religion in society and they have opinions about religion in society. Therefore they have every right to post questions/answers here.
3.Many atheists are former believers and/or have studied religions/religious texts extensively. Therefore they have plenty of reason to be here and reply to religious/spiritual questions.
4.People here address questions to atheists, ask questions about atheists/atheism, and ask questions atheists have opinions about. So again, atheists have every right to be here to answer them.
5.There are no rules that exclude atheists from participating here. There are plenty of forums specifically for Christians or practitioners of other religions. If somebody wishes to participate in an echo-chamber they're welcome to go to one of them.
6.Straight Christians and other believers often go over to the LGBT group and give their opinions about LGBT issues, so there's no reason atheists should be prohibited from providing their opinions about religious issues particularly since they affect us so significantly.
7.When Christianity gets itself out of the legal system, the government, the schools, etc. then I'll leave here. That probably won't happen any time soon.

  • We have to date answered THIS question?, about a trillion times!
We also ask why believers feel they the right to judge GLBT's, even to the extent of going to their (GLBT) category!
And we ask just the usual everyday normal questions about tierranny!
And we defend ourselves everyday by answering questions about what we think, and don't think about, religion, evolution, sex, science, and dinosaurs!!

  • where else would they go.......they need us

  • Yes, you can be an atheist and still be spiritual. An example would be a Buddhist.

I come here mostly because I'm bored, but I also actually learn stuff from this forum.

  • Weren't there, like, 1000's of similar questions popping up when you typed this in? Because, I'm pretty sure this has been answered once or twice before...maybe even once or twice today.

  • To laugh at fundies mostly.

    Besides....people keep asking us questions.

  • To answer the questions you guys keep asking about and to us.

  • If you've been here long enough to notice that atheists hang out here, that means you've seen their questions and answers, and you already know what kinds of questions they ask and answer .... right?

  • Mostly because... Without us, they wouldn't have anything to not believe in :)

  • I feeling benevolent. I'm going to give you a quick tutorial on searching for old questions. See that spot where it says "Search for questions?" Go there. Type in something like "atheists in R&S.' Click Search. It will bring up at least 200 questions asking, "Why are atheists in R&S." You'll have more answers than you know what to do with.

  • I am not an atheist, but I had to say thanks for asking this question. Hopefully some of the things said by loving Christians will touch the hearts of some of these who do not believe, and they will come to know the joy of being saved. Don't be discouraged, some of them will want to say something to you to run you off. Don't let that happen. But also, don't get angry with them, this is what some of them want, so they can say"see, you are no better than us."

God is great, and He will see you through it all. God Bless.

  • I check out R&S and other sections to see the questions and answers on varies topics. Isn't that the whole point of Yahoo! Answers?

I'm not a philospher but I still checkout that section. Althought this is probably the only section that has some scary questions/answers. So I thumbs up the good answers. But I am not trying to be rude or cause problems.

And a lot of people ask non-believers questions and I can't help give my input. Although these questions should be posted on asktheatheists.com and not in R&S. But whatever.

  • Don't get all excited thinking atheists are here to "find God" or be spiritual. We're here to point out the imperfections of religion and the belief in God.

  • To answer questions about religion and spirituality.
    And to procrastinate.

    And occasionally to *ʞuıɹp*.

Sure there are spiritual atheists. The only requirement for being an atheist is to not believe in the existence of any deities.

  • You do not have to be religious or even believe in a deity to be spiritual.

  • well, we hang out in other areas too....

its just that here, well. We TALK about our faiths. So it comes known. And notice how many times that question gets ask a DAY? Really...... hmmmm.

And we can answer any question on here. And we ask a lot of different kinds on here.

  • Unfortunately, there is a fundamentalist movement trying to introduce ID/Creationism into our public school systems.

  • Because this isn't the " freaks only" section. Anyone can come on here and discuss religion and/or spirituality.

  • We are here because some one needs to keep a tab on the religious and spiritual people to ensure the dark ages never return.

  • Atheists visit the "R&S" section because...

We know many of the answers.
    We're interested in the topics.
    We've made friends here.

Finally, of course... when we try to discuss our metaphysical perspectives in the "Cats" section, they tell us to scram.

(And personally, I usually have nothing better to do)

  • It's interesting to watch.

The bigger question is why would a True Believer have so many odd questions? Where is your faith people?

  • Of COURSE an atheist can be spiritual! Sheesh! Why do you think theists are so afraid of atheists, they speak with passion and conviction, and often far more coherently than theists.

Often atheists come to these types of forums to cnvey some of their own enlightenment to theists or other atheists. Also, to enjoy and share a sense of humor with like minded people.

  • To play with the fundies, and commune with fellow skeptics.

  • You're still new here.....but you'll see that your question is asked a few times a day.

Here's my answer.....all the sites are open to everyone....you don't have to know anything about cars and it's open to people who still want to participate.

I'm an Atheist.....and I'm a very spiritual person. Check out what spirituality really means.

    Welcome to R&S.

  • Because opposites attract?

  • If this place had and Atheist section the religious right would be there .

On other boards the Fundies are everywhere BUT the Christian section attacking not only atheists but every other religion that attempts to have an intelligent dialog among their peers.

So why can't they hang out here? Would you turn them away from your church?--I'm guessing you would

  • First of all, I am only considered atheist by other people, not by myself. I am Buddhist. I think that moniker falls into either "R" or "S", dontcha think?

There's no real category I answer questions on. I stay away from blatant fanatical questions, and try to spread a message of tolerance in diversity to all.

I have yet to ask a question. I don't really feel the need to spend my points on what amounts to rhetoric, which, if you look around...is what most people ask.
