| Why do most (note MOST, not all!) atheists here think they know the truth? | | Published by: rose 2009-01-09 |
When there is currently no proof either way that God exists or not. All both sides have is their faith and beliefs that they are right.
Is it plain arrogance on both sides to claim the other is absolutely wrong?
We know so little about life on Earth much less how the universe works so to claim that there absolutely can't be a God that created it just strikes me as arrogance and ignorance. Just as does those that claim to know what God thinks and wants are ignorant and arrogant.
I personally believe in God but have no proof. I don't tell atheists they are stupid for not believing or that they will go to hell for not believing because I know I don't know everything.
And to those that are just here to make fun of others, grow the hell up. Your childishness is just plain stupid. BOTH SIDES! The believers especially should know better because your books tell you to be nice!
And no, I am not religious either.
Those who thinks they knows are truth are lying through their teeth. Atheists or theists alike.
Atheism is a belief that makes no supernatural claims, allows for new information to change its paradigms, and is generally open, curious, analytical, and progressive. They welcome discourse, question everything, and are willing to change their views should new data appear. Atheists don't care if people question their beliefs and welcome the chance to defend them.
Religious belief is dogmatic (no new ideas, and the ones written thousands of years ago are not to be questioned no matter how archaic stoning might seem.) And at its core every religion makes an unsubstantiated claim that the supernatural exists. But when pressed no evidence is ever submitted. So many religious people take offense at the slightest suggestion that their beliefs are no different than earlier beliefs in Zeus and Thor that it's considered impolite to probe in any deep way. This sensitivity would strike me as condescending if it weren't self imposed.
Basically, in the main, Atheists have both the moral and the intellectual high ground. This explains most of what you're asking, and also why Atheists have to tippy toe around religious people for fear of provoking tears, confusion, or jihad. Hot Air » Blog Archive » Poll: 56% of atheists find radical :: They think they are the only true church and all the other sects of Christianity were not “real” .. I sleep well at night, do you? Most of the time, yes. http://hotair.com/archives/2007/06/16/poll-56-of-atheists-find-radical-christianity-as-threatening-as-radical-islam/HOME |
They perceive that the dictates of logic and evidence make them more correct than Theists (of whatever stripe).
I have noticed that most answers come from people that hold strong convictions. These people are more likely to think that their "truth" is the only one than those with a more questioning attitude.
your comment about arrogance is well taken. Only the truly prideful will claim that they possess a full knowledge of all that is in Heaven and Earth (whether they are theists or not).
The concept of god was created by man. People seem to need a reason for why things happen. Not me. I don't claim to know for sure that a god being doesn't exist, but if one does exist does it really matter? There really is no evidence for an ultimate creator, so I don't believe in one. I guess you could call me an apathetic atheist.
There is no evidence God exists just like there's no evidence for the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I don't believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It stands to reason that I also wouldn't believe in anything else for which I have no evidence.
I don't "know" anything, I just don't believe in the fairy tales that the believers try to convince me of.
I also do not believe my neighbor that he sees treesprites in his back yard.
And that guy on TV that claims to have seen the Loch Ness monster, I also don't believe his story. I know he believes it, I just don't.
it also seems to me that atheists argue more with eachother. they think that they know so much, even more than fellow atheists
