The environmentalists are always trying to stop the government from allowing more mercury in the water, more toxic emissions in the air and more destruction of wild lands and species.

But so many people are dead set on destroying the so called "hippie liberal nazi's" before they can ever do that.

Do you people hate this planet or something? Do you want to be poisoned? I don't get it!

Why would people also rather get 5mpg than 40 mpg?

let's think about this for a minute.
suppose there's 0.000001% of mercury in your water.
we could reduce it to 0.0000005% (50% less) and it would cost you $100,000.
would you do that?
if you didn't, would it mean you "want more poisons in (your) air and water?"

maybe it's more complicated than "do you want more or less mercury (or ??) in your air or water."

that said, for many people, and corporations, money is what's important.
whatever costs less will be the choice.
and if public health suffers, that's too bad.

It's because industry controls the government. Most industries don't care about the environment as long as they can make a larger profit margin, reduce costs and cut jobs. Sadly they're the ones who don't care about the environment. And in most cases it's not that the general public "wants" more pollution it's that they don't understand the sources and effects of these chemicals. If they did they would rail against industry being allowed to pollute their homes.

You are being very silly and immature. You are also doing a disservice to your cause. Those people who are in favor of freedom and against the government deciding every little aspect of their lives including what type of car to drive do not say that they want poison in the air or water. You show a lack of understanding of democracy as well as a lack of understanding of a free-market society. After you become better educated, you will understand that we need a balance between government regulations and freedom in order to preserve our society. Lose the dogmatism and grow up.
