I'm not a pagan or anything and I have no solid beliefs on the powers or lack of powers of runes. But I am a linguist and historian and I'm vastly interested in folklore, mythologies and ancient beliefs. So having decided that language is one of the most powerful forces humans can master, I've decided that that's why runes (and any other alphabet, for that matter) are powerful.

To the non Pagan yeah sure use it as an Alphabet or whatever... to you it shall remain just letters. Nothing wrong in that.
Yet to the trained Adept the Rune contains a teaching utilizing far more than just a letter of an ancient language. The rune is an extension of the Odinic force that courses in each of us whether you accept it as a fact or not. The Rune used in a specific way has an in-direct similarity vibrational aspect that attracts the exact similar vibrational aspect to the effects practiced by using a rune. Thus having the desired magickal effect. Yet this is for the dedicated Adept of the Art...
Using a rune as written language won't yield it's magickal aspects into manifestation.
