It's not other people's choices. It's criminal justice, which we pay taxes for. A rape kit is evidence collection, plain and simple, and does nothing for the victim except help ensure their rapist will be brought to justice.
Incidentally, ten bucks says you a) think rape victims bear some blame for their assault or b) are just trying to get folks riled up with your question.

Have you ever been raped? Is being raped a choice? No, but in order to prosecute the person who raped you, then you need proof (ie. a rape kit).
If you were a rape victim you'd be pissed off too. Why should a rape victim have to pay for it. Did they CHOOSE to get raped? Have some sympathy.
Right. Why don't burglary victims just start paying for police services out of their own pockets? Why should the government even bother with trying to stop crime and protecting its citizens? Undoubtedly, since people are raped because they asked for it, they don't deserve any help from the government at all.

Do you want the rapist to go free and rape you, your sister, or your friend next? Should a robbery victim pay for the police to dust for fingerprints? Should the murder victim's family pay for the forensics done on the gun? Honestly, I hope you just didn't think this through. Say a prayer of thanks none of your loved ones have been through a rape because then you'd understand.

Rape is not a choice. Rape is brutal crime. Crime is only a choice if you are a criminal, not the victim. These rape kits apparently cost $1,200. If someone raped you, then told you you had to pay $1,200 for something that should be provided automatically you probably wouldn't be too happy. From what I've heard, this was done in an attempt to block the victims from getting "morning after" contraceptive pills, and IMHO, its downright barbaric, if its true. Also, as rape can spread life-threatening illnesses such as AIDS, where is the choice in that? Or are you just posting this to see how many nasty answers you are going to get, because I guarantee you are going to get them for this question. Do you actually have a soul?
A rape kit, just like any service that the police or emergency personnel provide is a matter of public safety. To compel the victim of a crime to pay for a rape kit is sort of like asking the victim of a mugging to have to pay the police to go after the assailant.

Do you have any idea what that person goes through after something like that. Then to be told oh by the way you have to pay for the rape kit to be done to catch your assailant. You are correct, having a rape kit done is a choice. Unfortunately, alot of women post-rape are terrified to even make this choice for themselves. Getting raped, however, is not a choice. They have every right to have the crime which was done against them investigated and also the right to know whether or not this criminal has given them some sort of disease.
Every sort of medical procedure available is a choice. Everyone has the choice to live or die and therefore any medical decision based on this is a choice.
