We found our ferret today when our neighbor found her in her back yard. The only thing is that it has been 5 days since she was gone and she probably hasn't found that much to eat ever since. We took her to the vet and she gave her some fluids and said she might not drink too much because of it. She did eat. Not too much, but it seemed like a good amount. She also had some pedialyte. Is there anything else we can do for her to make sure she will be okay? She is hardly walking and is always lying down or sleeping. And when she does walk around, she is very wobbly.
You should just leave her to do her rest, and don't disturb her. Leave food and water buy her area. When she gets hungry enough she'll eat. This happened to my cat and we had to give him fluids so he wouldn't dehydrate. He's fine now, and it hasn't happened since. It only takes about a week or two for them to get better. It's probably something she got into. I had two ferrets a number of years ago and on two occasion, they got out and were lost. One was lost for a couple of days and it was terrible. I'm sure this is tough for you.
The fact is there is no certain answer to your question. Just give your ferret lots of love, warmth and liquids, as well as any food it will eat or prefers.
I would guess the odds are in your favor, but only a vet could give you your most reliable estimate. Best of luck! Optional-electrolyte water (really helps-comes in powder form), baby food such as chicken or mashed bananas
OR
1 cups of moistened ferret food, moistened with fresh chicken broth or water. Not canned broth as it has too much sodium.
1/3 of a tube of Ferretvite or Nutrical
1 jars Gerber chicken and gravy baby food #2
8 oz. Pedilyte only if your ferret is dehydrated / spring water will also work.
1 Teaspoon of Bone Meal Powder (get at heath food store)
2 Tablespoons of Nupro (get from The Ferret Store) http://www.theferretstore.com 1-888-833-7738
1 cans Science Diet A/D (get at a veterinarians office)
4 chicken thighs. I use chicken thighs, dark meat is higher in calories, but any chicken or all can be used. Also note, you can use 2-3 more jars of the chicken baby food in replacement of the boiled chicken.
Directions:
Boil chicken thighs, save broth. I tear the meat and skin off the bone and put it in a blender with 3 cups (more or less) of the broth and puree it. Then add the rest of the ingredients and blend, more water may be added if needed.
This recipe makes approximately 5-6 cups of Duck Soup. Pour soup into ice cube trays, it will take 3-4 trays. Once frozen, pop out cubes and put into a freezer bag. Thaw 1 cube (per ferret) and add 1-2 Tablespoons of water to thin it. You want it luke warm not hot.
Renowned for nursing ferrets everywhere back to health! Good luck! (BTW I would also phone the vet again to check and see if she needs to come back in)
It was most likely very stressful and she needs to adjust back to normal living. Any major stressful change (in my case, it is moving around) and my ferrets tend to sleep a lot the first week or two, and eat a bit less.
As long as she is taking the pedialyte, eating, and drinking fluids once the subcutaneous fluid your vet gives wears off (once the bump of fluids is completely gone), I wouldn't worry. The wobbliness is probably from not eating much for 5 days.
Make sure she is also defecating and urinating normally. The poop may be a bit runny for a few days (or even bright green if she is a marshall's ferret- they all carry ECE) because of the stress, but should go back to normal.
Get her to the vet QUICKLY!!! She might have ingested something poisonous.
btw:Marshall ferrets are domesticted= not suited to survive in the outdoors.
We can only guess now what she might have eaten.
If she has a multi level cage, you might want to section off the top floor (s) so that she doesn't hurt herself trying to navigate shelves and ramps. Also, chicken or turkey baby food is great for ill/injured ferts. Another thing to try is vanilla lactose-free ensure (if you know she isn't insulinomic). Ferrets love it to death, and it is a great caloric supplement.
Hope this helps and that your girl stays healthy :) Good luck.
you should take her back to the vet for a second dose of fluids and also ask for some Prescription diet a/d (its canned food), its high in fat and can easily mixed with warm water..I feed it to my ferrets when they are sick. Also give her ferretvite which is also high in calories and full of good vitamins.Sounds like shes been through a lot and needs time to recouperate, good food, warm place to sleep and ur love I'm sure she will pull through. Good Luck, Im Glad You Found Your Ferret!!
try chicken or turkey baby food.most ferret will eat it.don't give your ferret alot do because she has not eaten in a couple of days.and feed her,her ferret food.in a couple of days if she still looks sick to you take her to the vet again.
hope your ferret will be okay.
