All those people who objected to the building of factories over the past two decades also have their share of the blame and have much to answer for..

It goes back decades. Take British Leyland cars for example. It was formed from the failed BMC cars because the workers wanted too much and the management were weak and the Government (then as now) were only interested in votes so caved in and supported a failed industry yet again. The money wasted there could have created new productive work/jobs. Instead it eventually turned into Rover and finally closed - 30 years to late and cisting us all a fortune in wasted opportunities!
I see FORD/GM in the US are asking for (another) bailout. In all sanity the Jap cars have been there 30 years now!!!! How much more time do FORD/GM need to see their problem is they are building poor quality and wrong model cars! They have concentrated on SUV's because they cannot build small economical cars and make a profit. The Prius has been on the market several years - what have the US car makes done except ignore that it is the future and continue to build bigger and bigger SUV's! The most popular US car for years has been the Honda Accord and Lexus at the top end!

Look at Germany. They have concentrated on cranes, innovative cars, concrete pumping machines etc. which the world want to buy. Germany is the world's largest exporter!
Switzerland has concentrated on low volume high value specialist engineering (like rail equipment) where it is not sensible for someone else to set up in competiton as the market is so small.
Until our Government realises the facts of life and stops spinning lies, taxing us to death, covering up it's incompetence, and trims the bloated public sector (at the expense of the wealth creating private sector) we will continue our downward spiral!
