Relação de Produtos do Microsoft Select:: Página desenvolvida por Joaquim Valmir/ NPD e atualizada em 02/03/97. . Windows Speller; Microsoft Word for Windows Thesaurus; Microsoft Word/Excel 97 http://www.npd.ufc.br/npd-prod.htmHOME | Hi,
This post relates to a Word 97 Spellcheck problem. I am running Windows 98 with WORD as a part of a fully installed Office 97 Professional package.
I have many words in the supplementary dictionary, “../Office/custom.dic”. Included are some words containing accented characters, eg, cliché (with an e-acute as the final letter).
Recently, for some reason unknown, the WORD spellchecker doesn’t recognise accented characters. It will add any such new word, but with the accented character being added as “?” in place of the correct character.
If I Spellcheck a document containing a few misspelled such words, suggestions for words I had previously added contain the wrong accented letter. Eg, Aimée (with an acute-e as the first e) is suggested as Aim-e (with some unknown symbol as the first e). It seems this unknown character is from a different symbol set, or from a symbol set from a different font.
If I copy this unknown letter to NotePad, it displays correctly as the acute-e. If I copy it to a new WORD document it displays as the unknown character.
Suggestions for words I have added since the problem arose either do not include the added word, or include a “?” in place of the accented character.
None of my global settings (keyboard, language, font, time zone, WORD Template, etc) have changed.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Peter
Sure of it. I have started Word with no normal dot, so it creates a new one with no toolbars etc.
I have all my essential files backed up so there should be no problem with the office reinstall.
But it seems to be a fair bit of work. Is there a possibility it will solve the problem?
Been there, done that tracy, no luck.
What about my last thought of a total Office reinstall?
You currently have multi-language support off? But don't you need it?
I'm glad you fixed the problem, I wish the measures didn't have to be so dramatic.
are you able to type the correct words normally?
Have you installed any patches?
have you tried changing fonts?
I'm going to keep looking.
And, you haven't installed any patches or updates to ANY programs?
btw, what's your operating system?
the accents in the email and word document came through fine. It would seem that Word is having a problem displaying text properly.
I'm not going to I know for sure that reinstalling completely (which means removing all files and registry settings) will fix the problem, but since I can't find any other articles about this, it would seem to be the next option.
*lol* - I just had dinner!
from what I've read, it seems linked to your language settings.
multi-language support can cause problems.
btw - you aren't actually on a mac are you?
also, after your reinstall, did you install the patches?
Well, the patches that Windows update suggests. But I didn’t think they were relevant. No Word or Office pathes.
Its:
American Megatrends
CyrixInstead 6x86MX(tm)
Ram 95 Meg
Hard drive 4.1 Gig
Operating System Windows 98
It's worked fine for a couple of years. This problem only arose a few weeks ago.
Peter, Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday, I was very busy. But, I have been thinking about your issue. After your last email, I think we need to review the problem step by step.
As to you q about reinstalling windows 98 - yes, it probably would fix the problem, but that is drastic and what if it happens again? It may be something we can easily fix. But first we need to narrow down where the problem is. I'm afraid your last email thoroughly confused me, so I'd like to ask a list of questions. ORFO 2004 - Russian Spelling (Spell Check), Grammar, Thesaurus :: Spell-checking, thesaurus and hyphenation: MS Word 97/2000/XP/2003/2007, MS FrontPage 2000/XP/2003, MS Publisher XP/2003/2007, MS Works 4.x http://www.allvirtualware.com/rusoft/orfo.htmHOME |
1. When you type international characters (ics) in Word, do the proper characters appear?
2. When you type ics in a non-Office program, do the proper characters appear?
3. When you cut and paste between Word and a non-Office program, do the proper characters appear?
4. Is your computer set to multi-language support?
5. Do the characters print properly despite what the monitor shows?
No I'm not on a mac. Patches after reinstall? I had no patches associated with Office.
I've actually downloaded and re-installed multilanguage support from microsoft. I thought it was an outside chance, as it's an OS rather than an office program. No difference though.
The symbols aren't displaying as I wrote them. Different all together to what I had before the post.
Hm, no I'm not saying it's only the spellcheck that messes up. But maybe some sleep is needed?? I think we'll be very lucky to hit the jackpot in the next quater hour?? I'm fine . . . but??
there have been patches that interfere with objects no one planned on. Having the accents show up is part of multi-language support. But, since they're still showing up in Notepad... that's the frustrating part. How about Outlook? Do you use it? Can you copy/paste in there?
hmm - can you create a document with some accented words and send it to me?
I reformatted my business laptop over New Years.
I still have another system to do..
*sigh*
This is why I was taking so much trouble to spell things out. I probably made it more complicated than it needed to be.
The last line was it adds an ¨¦ (that is an acute e - or an e with a line above it slanting to the right) for a §Û (that is a kind of backward N with a line above it)
Hmm . . . is there some kind of "Global Symbol set" setting??
Yes Tracy, I am able to type the correct words normally.
I use the (Ctrl-“)or(Ctrl-~)etc(letter) method of inserting accented letters, a method which continues to function normally. Furthermore, I have most of the words in AutoCorrect, so if I type them correctly they display properly.
It is only when I mistype a word that the spellchecker fails to suggest the correct word.
No, I have not installed any patches, and the error persists regardless of using different fonts.
Peter
Sorry about your puding. It would be nice if they had some time indicator for both parties on each display. It's 4pm here.
It was only the very last post that had alien symbols.
Yeh, I've been pretty thoughly over all my global settings.
Try this: Tools, Options, Spelling & Grammar, Dictionaries, Edit your dictionary.
It will open it in word - how do the accented characters look now?
probably still messed up. So, the problem lies in Word, not your dictionary. I can't find anything at the mskb... I would try reinstalling word - Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Office 97, Change/Remove, Reinstall.
Do you think it might be worthwhile re-installing Windows 98
There's a problem with attachment uploading. I'll send you my email in a private message.
Dinner? It's 4 in the afternoon here. I had a very late lunch.
Well Tracy, that was a rather futile exercise. I’m glad it was my idea. I’ll detail it in case it gives you some clues.
I had one problem removing the office program
(Error while configuring ODBC drivers!
The configuration of the ODBC Microsoft access driver (*.mdb) driver failed) Medical Spell Check Dictionary Software Upgrades for Medical :: Sylvan's new spell check version is Microsoft Wordâ„¢ version 2.1. Microsoft Word 97, 2000,2002 or 2003, Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista 32 bit http://www.sylvansoftware.com/medical-spell-checker-upgrade-wd.htmHOME |
but it didn’t seem to effect the uninstall.
I ran the “Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility”. This required that I remove some files using “aggressive” removal. After re-booting and reinstalling the Office programs nothing had changed.
A couple of things I’ve noticed that might be worth mentioning:
If I copy an English “Pound” from Dreamweaver it pastes into a Word document as “£” but into NotePad as the correct symbol.
If I copy Régime from Bookshelf Basics, or apparently any non-Word program, it pastes into a word document as régime.
If I copy the é into Notepad it displays correctly as é. If I paste it into an outlook express Rich Text document it displays as é.
If I make up a word including a “Keyboard created accented letter” spellcheck adds the accented letter as “?”.
If I do the same with some other symbols, spellcheck considers the letters prior to, but not including the symbol as a word.
If I do the same with some other symbols, spellcheck considers the whole to be a word, but adds the symbol as a different letter, eg it adds an é as a é.
Hmmm?
Tracy,
You're probably as happy as I am to hear that I've finally bitten the bullet. I decided this dilemma had taken up enough time and energy - from both of us. I re-installed Windows.
This was a little more tricky than an ordinary install, as I was upgrading to SE and had to install from dos after changing quite a few file-names.
Whatever the problem was, I suspect something to do with multilanguage support, it's finally been put to rest.
Thanks heaps for your persistence and energy,
Peter
well, I'm deffy burned out.. I just splattered pudding all over my office..
so now, instead of ? you're getting varied symbols?
check your OS language settings for starters.
Tracy,
No need to apologise. Your persistence and efforts are much appreciated. And, as there is an obvious time zone problem here, please don’t feel obliged to continue beyond a reasonable time (I don’t mind at all picking up the thread on the following day).
You’re right about simplifying the understanding of the thread. Trying to describe symbols with symbols that display inconsistently is obviously impossible. In answer to your list of questions:
1. When you type international characters (ics) in Word, do the proper characters appear? (Yes)
2. When you type ics in a non-Office program, do the proper characters appear? (I only type international characters in Word. I can insert them into Dreamweaver via the insert feature. They appear correctly)
3. When you cut and paste between Word and a non-Office program, do the proper characters appear? (Between Word and Outlook Express - Yes. Between Word and Notepad - No) {3a When you cut and paste between a non-Office program and Word, do the proper characters appear? (No)}
4. Is your computer set to multi-language support? (Yes)
5. Do the characters print properly despite what the monitor shows? (The characters print precisely as the monitor shows, regardless of whether I “think” it is the right or wrong character)
I’ve type a few characters with simple explanations of how they appear in Word. I’ll cut and paste this whole reply from Word.
á . . . . a acute (a with a line slanting up towards the right)
í . . . . i (ditto)
é . . . e (ditto)
à . . . a grave (a with a line slanting up towards the left)
ñ . . . n tilde
ç . . . c with a tail
Ç . . . C with a tail
Peter
PS This is an edit. I just checked this posting and all the characters were displayed correctly on my monitor.
No, I had multilanguage support on all the time. I suspect that, even though it was on, it was somehow not functioning properly.
Yes, the tortuous paths we need to take in order to resolve a simple problem certainly are a pain!
I use Outlook Exress.
I just sent you an email with a zipped doc attached.
The accents don't copy into a plain text e-mail, but display fine in a rich text format.
My view too Tracy.
I'll do it and get back to you in a couple of hours. Gotta have lunch.
The fact that wordpad doesn't have a problem leads me to believe that your fonts are fine.
something I just considered - your normal.dot may be the problem. When you uninstalled/reinstalled, that file was not touched.
Find your normal.dot and rename it to abnormal.dot. Then, restart word and give your dictionary a try.
Tracy,
Sorry if this is posted late. Different world time zones mess up the flow of communication aye?
I’ve included custom.dic in the attachment. I suspect there’s nothing wrong with the file though.
A couple of things you might like to check.
Aimée, for example was originally added (and appeared as a suggested spelling) as just that – A-i-m-(e-acute)-e. That’s how it appears if I open it in notepad. But if I open it via WORD/options/spelling & grammar/dictionaries/edit it appears as Aimée – that is A-i-m-é-e.
Prajña was originally spelled – P-r-a-j-(the Spanish n with a tilde)-a. That’s how it appears in notepad. But if I open it via WORD/options … it appears as Prajca.
Pardon my elaborate way of describing words. I just wanted to know the right message was getting through.
Peter
yes, Dinner. I'm in the US - it was dinner for me then. :-) and now, it is very late and I am having a difficult time thinking straight. I read your response and I'm sorry that the reinstall didn't work. could you reread your response, especially the examples and tell me they are correct... the last line is really confusing.. "it adds an é as a é "
so, are you saying if you PASTE into word, it's ok? but if you spellcheck, accented letters get messed up again?
Peter, can you upload your custom.dic? That way, if I set it up on my system, I can tell if it is the dictionary or something gone bad on your system.
Please zip it first.
Tracy,
I've completely removed Word and the spellchecker from the office settup. I've rebooted and then reinstalled them. But no luck.
Is it worth completely removing office, including the post removal cleanup, then reinstalling it?
The total reinstall would be worth trying - I just don't like suggesting that... You lose all your custom settings. It's a very last resort.
Are you sure you got the correct normal.dot? With many updated operating systems, there's more than one copy out there. You many only use one, but it may not necessarily be the one you think it is. (I'm just trying to avoid the complete reinstall)
so you do have multilanguage installed??? I saw an article earlier, but I didn't read it enough...
